SPACE EXPLORATION
TO SEE ALL OUR AMAZING LEARNING RESOURCES

If you are a real space fan you can extend your learning at the Kids Astronomy Academy!!
This creative problem solving unit is all about the mystery, the science, the challenges, and the excitement of space exploration. It covers the history of astronomy from ancient times until 2010 and from here and now into the future. Students will learn about the Space Race from the V-2 rockets of WWII to the Cold War and the launch of the Russian satellite Sputnik. They will learn about NASA, the Mercury and Apollo missions, the American moon landings, the shuttle program, the International Space Station, and the Hubble space telescope. The astronomers, NASA engineers, and astronauts we will learn about were creative problem solvers that had to overcome many challenges to make their dreams of space exploration become reality. Scientists are learning so much right now about our solar system; it is much larger than we thought even a few decades ago. We’ll learn about the planets and their moons, asteroids, meteoroids, comets, the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. New discoveries about the possibilities of life elsewhere in our solar system and beyond are very exciting. It will be up to today’s students, the next generation, to use their creative problem solving skills to expand our knowledge of the universe and maybe even to colonize other planets, if they dare.
Essential Questions
How have scientific advances improved our lives? What technologies and products are space research spin-offs?
How can one employ the steps of creative problem solving and decision makking into everyday life?
What can we learn about space by carefully observing the sky?
What important discoveries were made about astronomy before manned space exploration began?
How do rockets blast off?
What is required for humans to survive in space? How do they live and work in space?
Why is the International Space Station important and how does it affect international relations?
What does it take to be an astronaut in today’s world?
How do the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon affect each other?
How might it be possible for humans to live on Mars?
How are the four inner planets of our solar system similar to each other and how are they different?
How are the four outer planets of our solar system similar to each other and different from the four inner
planets? Why might this be?
How might it be possible for humans to live on Mars or the moon?
Could there be life on the outer planets or any of their moons?
What is a galaxy? What kinds of galaxies do we know about?

food to get them through the next winter the remaining Pilgrims invited ther
Indian friends to a harvest feast - the very first Thanksgiving in New England.
